Anime Recommendation (2) – Mirai Nikki

This week for my anime recommendation, I’ll be suggesting a fairly popular and somewhat controversial anime known as  Mirai Nikki (Future Diary).
Synopsis from Myanimelist:
“This psychological thriller, based on the manga written and illustrated by Sakae Esuno, is about Yuki, a loner who’s not very good with people. He prefers to write a diary on his cell phone and talk to his imaginary friend, Deus Ex Machina – The God of Time and Space. However, Yuki soon learns that Deus is more than a figment of his imagination when he makes Yuki participate in a battle royale with eleven others. The contestants are given special diaries that can predict the future, each diary possessing unique features that give it both advantages and disadvantages. Within the next 90 days, the contestants must try to survive until there is only one left standing. The winner will become the new God of Time and Space.”

Silhouette of 9 out of 12 participants

This series is a shounen, survival game with horror and thriller elements to it. At first glance, we have a lonely, somewhat sheltered middle school kid as the main protagonist who is then suddenly thrown into this death game in which he must participate or face being killed by the remaining participants. However, there is a mysterious girl in his class, Yuno, who is also a participant and is willing to help Yuki survive at all costs.

Some of the strengths I found in this anime were the characters, and the story. Starting off with the characters, there is a fairly large cast which not only includes the 12 participants, but also some of Yuki’s classmates, and his family who all play a relevant role in the plot and development. The majority of these characters are given a decent amount of screen time as well as back stories to help understand who they are and why they behave the way that they do. The story of Mirai Nikki is quite a roller coaster since it is filled with action, suspense, and plot twists throughout the series.

While this series may get a little bit ridiculous at times, its good to keep in mind that this is a shounen series so it is made to target a somewhat younger audience and sometimes its better to quit questioning it and just enjoy it for what it is. In addition, some parts of this series may be quite disturbing for some so be warned that this does contain quite a bit of gore and some sexual content. Putting that aside, I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys an action packed battle royal style anime.

The main female lead, Yuno
